A Loaf for the Journey
Following the opening of Photographing the Distance, this baking workshop invites audiences to
experience the exhibition’s themes of distance, memory, travel and place through taste and
smell. Led by Saudi baker Sumaia Showail, the hands-on workshop will explore how recipes,
ingredients and aromas carry stories across cities, families and sea routes.
Inspired by the Red Sea as a space of movement and exchange, the workshop will connect
baking traditions with the journeys of ingredients across the region, from spices and grains to
dates, coffee and coastal flavors. Participants will be introduced to a simple baking
demonstration and guided tasting that reflects how food can become a personal archive of
memory, belonging and cultural connection.
Materials:
Baking station, demonstration table, oven or pre-prepared baking setup, ingredients, utensils,
serving plates, gloves, aprons, recipe cards, printed ingredient story cards, microphone, screen
if needed, seating, water, coffee/tea, hospitality setup, photography and videography coverage.
Notes:
The workshop should be coordinated with Sumaia in advance to select a recipe that is practical
for the rooftop café setting and conceptually linked to the exhibition, the Red Sea Museum
narrative and the movement of people, ingredients and memories across distance.
Duration: 1.5 hours
Speakers: Sumaia Showail – Aish Academy or Omar Tigany (TBC)
